Charles Welles

Charles Welles is a sculptor who primarily carves marble. He has been carving for more than 30 years. His work includes figurative, abstract and conceptual work.

Charles has been affiliated with Artists For Art, which operates the AFA Gallery in Scranton, PA, since its founding in 1989 and is a past president. He was a founder and past president of the Lucan Center for the Arts in Scranton, and also a member of the Endless Mountains Council of the Arts (EMCA) based in Tunkhannock.

He is also a partner in the Springville Schoolhouse Art Studios, based in a former schoolhouse in Springville (north of Tunkhannock), which he and painter James Penedos are developing into live/work studios for artists.

Charles was also on the Board of Directors of the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland, Vermont, and has been active at the MARBLE/marble workshops in Marble, Colorado, and the Southwest Stonecarving Workshop in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. He is a practicing lawyer in Scranton, and has been active with other community and arts organizations.
