It’s the end of summer, the kids are back to school, and although the leaves are slowly changing, the temperatures are still keeping us warm for a bit longer. Despite the change of season, there are still plenty of things for you and your family to enjoy in the Wyoming Valley.
This August, join actor Anthony Michael Hall at the F.M. Kirby Center for a screening of everyone’s favorite coming-of-age dramedy, The Breakfast Club. After the screening, there will be an interactive discussion and Q&A with Hall. This event will take place on Saturday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. Anthony Michael Hall’s career has included multiple movies (National Lampoon’s Vacation, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Edward Scissorhands) and television programs (USA’s The Dead Zone, cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live). The Breakfast Club is known as the “quintessential 1980s film” and is considered as one of the best films of the decade.
For all you Beatles fans, Classic Albums Live presents The Beatles’ Abbey Road on October 4th at 8:00 p.m. Classic Albums Live takes classic albums and recreates them live, on stage. This is a performance you surely don’t want to miss! Tickets are now on sale.
Just in time for Halloween, join Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown host, Josh Gates for “An Evening of Ghosts, Monsters and Tales of Adventure!” on October 18th. The event will start at 8:00 p.m. Discovery Channel’s hit-series Expedition Unknown chronicles Gates as he sets out on a global quest to find the truth behind iconic legends and archaeological mysteries. Josh Gates is an avid explorer whose deep-rooted passion for adventure propels him to the farthest corners of the world.
The Sordoni Art Gallery will be hosting the Rust Belt Biennial Exhibition at the end of August. Rust Belt Biennial is a celebration of photography with work realized throughout the Rust Belt Region. Andrew L. Moore will serve as competition juror for the exhibit. The exhibit will run August 27-October 5, 2019.
On October 22nd, the Sordoni Art Gallery will display the exhibit “Two Presidents, One Photographer” – which showcases 56 of Chief Official White House Photographer Pete Souza’s photographs of two presidents from opposite ends of the political spectrum. This exhibit includes Souza’s favorite images of Presidents Obama and Reagan.
The Pauly Friedman Art Gallery will participate in the 10th Health Care Symposium: Arts in Healthcare. Arts in Healthcare is an exhibition of two- and three-dimensional artworks by a diverse group of artists. This exhibition will engage symposium participants and the campus community in reflecting on the benefits of art to the healthcare environment. This exhibition will provide a space for reflection as well as build observational, diagnostic, and empathic skills. The featured speaker for this event will be Houston-based artist Joseph Cohen. The exhibition begins August 23 and runs until October, 2019.
